An increase of 48.9% in one year was recorded in adoptions in Greece. In particular, in 2022, they reached 274 compared to 184 in 2021, according to the latest data from ELSTAT.
Specifically, in 2022, female adoptions amounted to 130 and male adoptions to 144, showing an increase of 28.7% and 73.5%, respectively, compared to 2021.
Adoptive parents are mainly two husbands and wives. In this category, there was a 26.8% increase (from 127 to 161) in adoptions compared to 2021.
A significant increase (from 25 to 71) was observed in adoptions by a stepparent representing a single-parent family (184.0%).
Regarding the legal status of adopted children before adoption, the largest category is children born out of wedlock.
From the comparison of these data between 2021 and 2022, a significant increase in adoptions was observed from 61 to 115 (88.5%) in the category of children born within marriage.
About the age of the adoptees, according to ELSTAT, for the year 2022, the majority (42.0%) of adoptions concerned children in the 0-5 age group.
An increase in the number of adoptions was observed in all age groups of adoptees, except for the 11-18 age group, which saw a decrease of 14.3%.
