Greece is expected to welcome a large number of international visitors, after being considered the Best Tourism Destination for this year, at the annual Grand Travel Awards in Oslo, Norway.

According to the National Herald, the announcement came after the Greek National Tourism Organization branch was considered Best Foreign Office after it worked to promote the country, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“What characteristic makes our country attractive to Norwegians? Is it just the sea and the sun, the sandy beaches, the gastronomy, the nature, the culture, and the scattered monuments and archaeological sites that transform the country into an “open-air museum?” the Head of GNTO’s Scandinavia and Baltic States branch, Pavlos Mourmas pointed out in this regard.

Greece is among the European countries that managed to keep a large number of international visitors even amid the pandemic, thus preventing a devastating situation for its travel and tourism sector.

The Minister of Tourism of Greece, Vassilis Kikilias, stressed that this year the country will continue to work for further extension of the tourism season, aiming to attract a large number of travellers from other countries throughout the year, after, according to him, the tourism sector is the biggest revenue engine.

Earlier this month, the Minister of Tourism of the Hellenic Republic also revealed that the country recorded the most significant recovery in air passenger traffic last year.

Minister Kikilias through a statement revealed that air passenger traffic in the Hellenic Republic last year remained only 1.9 per cent below the figures registered before the spread of the Coronavirus, in 2019.

He confirmed that the surge in the number of flights following the easing of the COVID-19 restrictions had a remarkable impact on the country’s economy.

Authorities in Greece are also planning to welcome a large number of travellers from the United States.

In a press release published in January this year, the Ministry of Tourism of Greece said that the country expects to open its doors to over one million travellers from America, and more than €1 billion in revenue from direct flights with the United States for the upcoming tourist season.

The data provided by Fraport revealed that a total of 31 million passengers were recorded at the airports in the Hellenic Republic last year.

According to Minister Kikilias, the figures mentioned above show a higher increase compared to the figures for 2019, claiming that these figures once again confirm the success of the tourism sector last year.
