Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto called the European Parliament (EP) one of the most corrupt organizations in the world.

“Confidence in the European Parliament is practically at zero. The recent corruption events have clearly shown that this is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world,” he said on Kossuth radio.

“I can remember very few statements, resolutions of the European Parliament that would help Europe. <…> Resolutions of the European Parliament usually harmed Europe,” the diplomat also stated.

In addition, Szijjarto reiterated Budapest’s official position on Ukraine: Hungary opposes anti-Russian sanctions in the energy sector, does not send weapons to Kyiv, and insists on a ceasefire and peace talks.

Recall that in December 2022 in Belgium, where the EP is located, several searches and arrests were carried out. A case of corruption related to the organization of the World Cup in Qatar was investigated. Several people were detained, including the deputy head of the EP, Eva Kaili. The media reported that bags of money were found during a search at her home. The politician is accused of “belonging to a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption.” She has already been expelled from the Greek party PASOK and suspended her membership in a political group in the European Parliament.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban then proposed to dissolve the existing European Parliament and “drain the corruption swamp” in the EU, hinting that the “threads” from the scandal with the detention of the deputy head of the EP could lead to the very top.

At the same time, according to the politician, after the dissolution of the legislature, a new EP should be formed, which will include national deputies. “Give control back to the EU member states,” he urged, stressing that oversight, accountability and trust would be guaranteed in this way.
